I am returning from a trip to New York, writing this post on the plane, so when I have a connection later, I can post it.
A thought that I wanted to share with you, has to do with how this industry in which we are, probably more globalize than the rest, media consumption and globalization are erasing each regions’ own characteristics.
The experience that brought this thought into mi mind was that on this trip I had a chance to share a meeting with a New Yorker that was educated in Boston, an Israeli, a Korean representing Asia and me representing South America. All of us sharing industry knowledge and being present at an event of the online advertising industry related to technology.
Besides of what made us being together is an important reason, it called my attention that we were all aware of the same pieces of news, we shared very similar point of views on different topics, such as the election on the US, global economy and plane travelling tribulations.
Having many cultural differences at the table, which should have been a factor into different point of views coming from different cultural approaches, there was nothing that could have generated what anthropologists call positive neo-centrism, which in other words means to believe that your own culture is better than others.
I guess that one of the reasons for this is related to the common places that this industry and globalization are placing us, and probably the role of the media has a lot to do with it.
Actually I don’t know either if what’s happening is good or bad. I believe that one of the positive aspects that you can find is that you can unify criteria and therefore it is easier to understand each other, what allows you to do business for instance. The negative aspect that I can see is that on this blending we are missing the particularities of each culture that distinguish it and makes it unique.
