This is a terrible piece of news for those that are trying to develop a model of content generation of professional video following the path of Hulu, TV.com and others..
The same way Google has to state that they are going to use behavioral targeting, they prefer to say “interest-based”, in this case using words such as close, cancel or discontinue they refer to “sunsetting and retire”
Actually Google announces that in the end of April the service will stop working which allows users to show ads in the content of YouTube in their pages (video units feature). Lets hope that this is temporary, until they propose a new way of monetizing visits.
The option to register and to advertise on video is not available for new publishers.
After the explanation to the market the three format for video monetization that they were trying there will be only 2 left:
- Click-to-play video ads: video ads showed and Adsense under the model of click-to-play video.
- Video units: The discontinued service.
- AdSense for video Beta: video ads to monetize your content on video.
Finally Google recommends “If you’re currently displaying video units, we recommend that you start removing the video unit code from your pages as soon as possible so you can optimize your available ad space in advance. Please be assured that any earnings you’ve generated from video units in the past will still be credited to your AdSense account.”
Google is also trying to separate the Premium content (professional) from the one generated by users according to what has been published by ClickZ. While Hulu is trying to obtain more deals with content providers such as Disney, Youtube is trying to look more like Hulu, including the way of advertising?
