La semana pasada tuve el honor de ser invitado disertar en el panel de nuevos medios en la XII conferencia sobre latinoameriuca que se realiza en Harvard Business School (HBS) desde hace doce anos, entre otros conferencistas como Vicente Fox ( ex presidente de Mexico), Ricardo Lagos (ex presidente de Chile), Woods Staton ( CEO de McDonals Latin America) entre otros. Lamentablemente por problemas de agenda no voy  poder participar pero no queria dejar de recomendarles este evento, e invitarlos a ir si tienen posibilidades.

Panel: “Doing Business in Latin America: The International Perspective”
Latin America has been a primary choice for the expansion of companies based outside the region. American and European companies have traditionally dominated the foreign presence in Latin America, but in the last few years Asian companies have also multiplied their activity in the region. The panel will discuss why Latin America has been such an attractive market and how this is likely to evolve in the future. In a large region twice the size of the US, with more than 20 countries and many cultural and political differences, how strong are the differences or similarities in the business environments? In what ways must companies from outside of Latin America change their business model to compete successfully in the region? To what degree must the international companies tailor their business models in each country? The panel will explore the particularities of customer and supplier behavior, the nature of competition and collaboration among companies. Panel: “Social Impact: Doing Business at the Base of the Pyramid”
The base of the economic pyramid (BOP) is a socio-demographic designation describing both the development needs and the market potential of over 4 billion people worldwide. The size and scope of the BOP market in 20 Latin American countries is impressive.Using a methodology developed with World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank economists, the BOP is defined as individuals earning less than $3,260 USD per year (PPP, 2005). In Latin America, that definition means that the BOP is 361 million people with aggregate income of $510 billion. Across the region, the BOP market share ranges from 25% to 65% of total household expenditures. The majority of Latin Americans suffer a “BOP penalty” in multiple forms: lack of access to essential goods and services, higher prices for goods and services, and/or poor quality of good and services. Reducing the poverty penalty is both a business opportunity for the private sector and defines a policy agenda for the public sector. Our panelists will discuss a wide range of profitable opportunities to approach the BOP in a variety of industries and business models. From entrepreneurial ventures to multi-billion dollar corporations, the BOP is increasingly being reframed as an attractive market segment and capitalism is increasingly being looked to as a source of systemic social change. Panel: “New Media in Latin America: Disruption or Evolution?”
The advent of the Internet dramatically altered the media landscape in the United States and Europe. New channels for distributing content fundamentally changedwho creates content and how to monetize it. Incumbents with profitable traditional media platforms struggled to adapt to the new landscape. Meanwhile, entrepreneurial ventures ranging from Google to the Huffington Post emerged and prospered. This picture hasn’t played out in the same way in Latin America. The adoption of new media in the region has been slow to date, but is rapidly increasing. This slow initial adoption allowed traditional media firms to adapt gradually, even as they watched their counterparts in more mature markets struggle. As a result, there have been limited new media opportunities for entrepreneurs in the region. Improvements in Internet access in Latin America may create exciting new opportunities for entrepreneurs. As we approach this tipping point, will we see entrepreneurship in new media take off, and what form will these ventures take? After a decade of exponential growth in Private Equity investments in the United States, Private Equity funds were attracted to Latin America by the prospect of higher returns. Latin American Private Equity reached its peak in 2007 in terms of deals and fundraising. Activity has been hampered in 2008 and 2009 due to the global credit crisis, but the region has been one of the first to recover and shows a promising outlook. El segundo dia EBE08 siguió tan intenso como el primero. Si bien escribir un post sobre un evento en el cual hay mas de 1000 bloggers, todos opinando distinto sobre cualquier tema que halla, aquí va mi versión.

Me costo arrancar a la mañana y cuando llegue tya estaba terminado la Mesa de Proyectos y Emprendedores. Presentada y moderada por Emilio Márquez (Networking Activo).

Como no lo vi y para no dejar incompleta la crónica les reproduzco los conceptos expresados por Alejandro Suárez, quien además de ser un amigo tiene el doble rol de emprendedor e inversor :

Me ha gustado más Ipoki, me había hablado de esta startup un amigo hace tiempo y aunque no le había dedicado mucho tiempo, si que me ha gustado. …..

Me cuesta un poco ver el modelo de negocio como oportunidad económica real, pero este chico tiene claro lo que está haciendo, si no se vuelve muy loco con los costes y necesita rentabilizar a día de hoy creo que es un proyecto con futuro. Creo mucho en la geolocalización, pero hay que buscarle una mayor utilidad que la de poner un mapita con donde estás en tu blog. Hay mil una aplicaciones de seguridad, de ocio y otras que vendrán en las que se puede trabajar.

Mi única pega: el hablar de expansión internacional en España en un proyecto que aun no está posicionado. Step by step my friend

El emprendedor me ha gustado, y creo que ese es un asunto critico. Le prestaré más atención a su web y lo testearé a fondo. Tiene buena pinta si se encuentra un modelo de negocio claro, y unas nuevas aplicaciones con enfoque más de economía real.

Smmart:

Es una herramienta de analisis, en la url www.analisisdemedios.es ¿? El nombre de Smmart me parece muy complicado, y no guarda relación con la url. Me suena algo rebuscado.

Lo enfocan como herramienta para agencias, para bloggers, una herramienta de diagnostico SEO y SEM. Lo probaré, no me parece muy interesante como modelo de negocio y startup pero si podríamos ser clientes de este tipo de servicio si es tan efectivo como lo venden. Podria ser útil como herramienta de comparación y seguimiento de competencia .

Widgatget:

A esta empresa la conocí hace tiempo y me pareció una iniciativa interesante y con futuro. De hecho ayer precisamente conocí a Isabel Sabadí en las oficinas de Yes.fm porque estamos viendo nuestros desarrollos de Widgets para el proyecto de Yes.

La idea es poder llevar widgets y música a los blogs, y que los usuarios puedan compartir sus propias playlist, asi como ver las posibilidades de desarrollar alertas de escritorio para poder poner un player en el escritorio de los usuarios.

Isabel dice “tuvimos suerte, y para convencer de que podría funcionar, tuvimos que desarrollarlo”. Me parece muy acertado, hay que desarrollar cosas y “enseñar la patita” y por estos lares es bastante habitual “vender” proyectos y pedir dinero para comenzar sin haber desarrollado ni demostrado que eres capaz. Creo que es un punto clave, para que por ejemplo WidGadget lograra en su día su primer cliente; el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona.

Creo que Isabel conoce perfectamente su sector y su trabajo. Lo tiene claro, desarrollan soluciones de futuro, y tienen una valor añadido claro, así como clientes que respaldan sus aplicaciones.

Mobifriends:

No se ha podido ver el vídeo. Una putadilla porque se ha colgado.

Es un servicio para conocer amigos por telefono móvil. Antes era un servicio de geolocalización que no funcionaba, por lo que lo modificaron ¿?

Hoy han abierto Mobifriends la beta privada (bien hecho aprovechar el EBE para abrir y comunicar). Es complicado posicionarse en chat y dating como sectores, pero puede ser un valor añadido a empresas de dating posicionadas.

A las  11:30 comenzó la presentación de Eduardo Arcos (Hipertextual) titulada Siempre conectado.

Con una presentación muy bien llevada relatando los efectos de la vida online y el life streaming, como es hoy y cuales el cree que seran los nuevos modos y efectos de esta tendencia en el futuro cercano , y recogiendo experiencias de eventos como el TechCrunch50

Eduardo quedo en pasarme la presentación, asi que si en algun momento lo hace la incluyo.

BTW, Comentario al margen al conocerlo personalmente tu primer impresion es que con ese humor ironico que tiene debe ser argentino, pero no es ecuatoriano.

Luego ya siendo pocomas de las 12:00 Tom Raftery (RedMonk) dio la que para mi fue la mejor presentacion del dia: Grid 2.0

Describiendo la poca evolucion que tuvieron las redes eléctricas en los últimos 100 años, comparándolas con los teléfonos y lo que yo suponía iba a ser otra presentación de como brindar servicios de Internet a traves de las redes electricas termino siendo un modelo de negocios basados en costos variables de la provisión de electricidad y de como aprovecharlos con la tecnología actual.

Usando generación de energía alternativa , utilizando autos para almacenar energía y comprar energía en el momento de sobregeneracion y vendiéndola cuando hay mas demanda. Almacenado energía en forma de frio o calor y usando tecnología para hacer un uso mas eficiente, si es que se puede alinear objetivos económicos de quienes proveen el servicio con quienes lo usan.

Mostro casos donde esto que parece ciencia ficción es una realidad y abrio un mundo de oportunidades a explorar. Mi única observación es que es un mercado tan regulado que no creo que lleguemos a ver esto en nuestra región y espero estar equivocado por el bien de todos.

Luego de esto fuimos a comer y a hacer mas networking.

Para cortar con  la modorra post almuerzo y cerca de las 15:30 se vino la mesa redonda latinoamericana convocada bajo el nombre de ¨La visión hispana de Internet¨

Los ponentes fueron  Gustavo Arizpe (México), Mariano Amartino (Argentina), Christian Leal Reyes (Chile) y Joan Guerrero (República Dominicana) donde modero Paco Olivares (Canal Sur).

La charla estuvo muy conectada con el publico via twitter, aunque Mariano se olvido los anteojos en Buenos Aires y no podía leer desde lejos. Principalmente la temática se centro mas de  lo que me hubiese gustado en el uso o no de un español neutro ( de telenovela, americano, castizo, o no se bien que quiere decir todo esto) y de si es necesario esconder o no los rasgos lingüísticos.

Una sorpresa en relacion al lenguaje fue que alguien de la mes, no recuerdo quien, leyo durante años a Mariano Amartino y no sabia que el era Argentino.

Seguida esta mesa vino el que se suponía debía ser el plato fuerte del evento Bret Taylor, CEO de FriendFeed, millonario, ex empleado de Google, una de las cabezas atras de Gmail, que se aburrio luego de hacer Google Maps y decicio dejar su compania.

Tal vez por la expectativa que tenia esparaba mas que cuenta su historia o transmita alguna vivencia que me dejara algo, en lugar de eso me contaron como funciona y el valor que aporta un producto que ya uso hace tiempo, por lo tanto la conferencia en lugar de ser la mejor charla , me dejo un sabor de decepcion , a pesar de las ganas que puso Mariano Amartino , entrevistandolo zagasmente.

Ya siendo cerca de las 18 vino la audaz propuesta de tomarnos una foto de familia con los mas de 1000 bloguers subidos al escenario en varias filas.

Por supuesto que no entraron todos y por suerte no todos lo intentaron. Mientras posábamos, no faltaron preguntas incomodas como ¿Soportara el escenario el peso de toda esta gente?

Si estas leyendo este blog y no lo estas leyendo en un periódico amarillista es por que el escenario soporto firmemente el peso de toda la gente.

Esta foto la saque tratando de retratar el desorden típico de tratar de ordenar a tanta gente para hacer una foto en partes que seria luego compaginada. Otro Muy buen trabajo de la organización del evento.

El siguiente track sin proponérselo termino siendo el track mas bizarro de todo el evento y el mas hilarante del día ( por que el mas hilarante del evento fue el del cierre a cargo de mi compatriota Hernán Casciari de Orsai).

El titulo que convocaba era el  ¨Estado de la Blogosfera¨  y los ponentes fueron una inefable Marta Pastor (RNE), un desopilante Ricardo Galli (Menéame) y un incrédulo  Josera Portillo ‘Zifra’ (Universidad de Sevilla) todos moderados indomablemente por  Chiqui de la Fuente (El País).

Mas allá de una interminable discusión sobre que es la blogosfera, lo surrealista del track fue la postura cerradísima que tomo Marta Pastor que ya desde los primeros minutos de la charla se gano el odio de toda la comunidad atrás del twitter y los primeros desacuerdos con el resto del panel que se mantendrían durante toda la charla.

Surgieron apodos como la Sarah Palin del EBE 08 o el troll del EBE.

Disquisiciones entre las diferencias entre bloggers y periodistas, generaron recuerdos a la audiencia en Twitter sobre Franco, la masonería, y muchísimas otras cosas, que aportaron el condimento que convirtió una serie de opiniones cuestionables en uno de los tracks mas recordados. Donde el consenso de la sala (wisdow of the crowd) expresaba una opinión completamente distinta a la de una ponente ( sin decir quien ☺)

El track siguiente fue la ceremonia de entrega premios Bitacoras.com 2008. Donde Arturo Raúl entrego los premios de las interminables categorias muy bien dirigidas, asi como todo el evento por Paniagua (todo un personaje).

Seguidamente y casi siendo las 22 hs vino el III Beers & Blogs, donde fuimos al salon cercano al Hotel pasando frente a donde MSN estaba inflando el globo con forma de usuario que llevaria a los afortunados ganadores del concurso.

La sección de Beers & Blogs fue un momento mas de Networking , donde intercambiar impresiones y profundizar relaciones.

Aquí lo memorable fue ver como la masa se acercaba cada vez mas a la puerta donde salía la comida y bebida, y lo poco que duraban las bandejas de comida.

Luego de poco mas de 2 horas de liquidar bandeja tras bandeja, se abrieron la comercialización de bebidas. Este hecho genero el malestar de algunas personas, donde se menciono que esto se podría interpretar como una estafa ya que se podría malinterpretar la oferta como canilla libre toda la noche con solo 10 euros.

Acto seguido uno de los organizadores (creo que fue Luis), se subió a un escenario y con la actitud que se debe tener en Internet , dando la cara, admitiendo el error y proponiendo una solución logro calmar a la audiencia y arrancar un aplauso del publico.

La solución propuesta fue ofrecer devolverles el dinero a quien se considere defraudado, y no creo que halla tenido que devolver un solo duro. Una vez mas chapeaux a la organización del evento.

Se que los festejos siguieron hasta altas horas de la madrugada, y algunas anécdotas que escuche mejor no bloguearlas, yo me fui a dormir mientras todavía estaban todos enteros…Foto by Lord Zoltan
